By better understanding (and enabling) 2-Step Verification on your account, you take a crucial step towards protecting your personal and work-related information. Here are a list of common questions you may have surrounding 2-Step Verification.
What Authenticator App Should I Use?
For Magic Memories employees, you should use either LastPass (if you have access to our Enterprise account) or Google Authenticator. These are the only apps supported for consistency, ease of administration, disaster recovery, and utilizing the services we pay for.
Why Can’t I Use an Authenticator App of My Choosing?
We understand that other apps may offer cool features, but we need to use Google Authenticator and LastPass for several reasons:
Consistency: Having everyone use the same apps makes it easier to provide support.
Ease of Administration: It simplifies managing and troubleshooting 2-Step Verification across the organization.
Disaster Recovery: Using supported apps ensures that we can recover and manage security codes effectively if something goes wrong.
Service Utilization: We want to maximize the benefits of the services we pay for. Specifically, Google Authenticator allows you to store 2-Step Verification codes directly to your work account, ensuring you can recover your codes if your device is lost or stolen.
What if a Website Only Offers an Application Like Authy to Store 2-Step Verification Codes?
All setup QR codes are universal for all authenticator apps. This means that even if a website suggests using Authy, SalesForce, etc. you can and should use Google Authenticator with your work account or LastPass. The process and security remain the same.
What’s the Difference Between 2SV, 2FA, and MFA?
You may encounter terms like 2-Step Verification (2SV), two-factor authentication (2FA), and multi-factor authentication (MFA). These terms are often used interchangeably and refer to the same concept: adding an extra layer of security to your login process. Whether it's called 2SV, 2FA, or MFA, the goal is the same—to provide an additional verification step beyond your password to protect your account and confirm you really are the user you claim to be when logging in.
What Happens if I Lose My Device?
If you lose your device that had an app with 2-Step Verification codes, you can still recover your 2-Step Verification codes if you used Google Authenticator with your work account, thanks to its ability to store codes in the cloud. If you’re using LastPass, you can access your codes from another device by logging into your LastPass account. It may not be possible to recover security codes from other providers. This is why we discourage alternative app use.
Can I Disable 2-Step Verification Once Enabled?
While it is technically possible to disable 2-Step Verification, doing so leaves you vulnerable to security threats, and also can result in locking you out of your Google account, now that Two-Step Verification is mandatory for some employees.
What Should I Do if I Have Trouble Setting Up 2-Step Verification?
